5 Lessons Learned From 5 Years in WordPress Design
If you’ve been following our blog for awhile you know that we’ve been doing this entrepreneur thing for 8 years. Feels like just yesterday we started this journey! What you might not know is that we’re celebrating another milestone this month, it’s been 5 years since we did a major reset on our business and decided to focus on providing website design services.
We’ve been through a lot in these last 5 years but if I had to sum it up, here are the top 5 lessons we’ve learned since the reset.
1. Get an outside opinion.
We are not a big fan of crowdsourcing your business, especially to people who don’t fully understand the decision you’re trying to make. At the same time, when you’ve been staring at a problem too long, an outsider’s point of view might be just what you need to shift your perspective. It literally didn’t occur to us that we could basically start over until someone said to us, “Well what do you like to do? Why can’t you just do that?”. If you’re really stuck on something reach out and ask someone you trust for their point of view. You don’t have to automatically take their advice but it might bring new insight to the situation.
2. Talk to people who work in complementary industries.
Our signature Syt In A Week package came from a conversation we had with a marketing person who wanted to offer template based designs to her clients. We didn’t end up forming a partnership with her but we did realize that it would be a good fit for us to shift from mostly custom to templated based design projects. Talk to people who also work with your ideal client and you might get a new idea for an offering or ideas for refining your current services.
3. Sometimes it really is time to blow it up and start over.
We get it. You pour your heart and soul into your business and the thought of throwing it all away is scary. But sometimes, that’s just what you need to do. If we hadn’t had the guts to start over 5 years ago, we’d probably be in the same place spinning our wheels today.
4. If you’re basically starting over, might as well do it right.
It’s easier to start from a good foundation than trying to build one when you’re already swamped with clients. Get organized from the beginning and you’ll save yourself a lot of time & headache along the way.
5. Don’t be upset if everything doesn’t fall into place right away.
Everyone has a different journey. Even after we figured out that we wanted to focus on website design, it still took time to develop and launch our signature package. Your business will continue to evolve, and that’s totally fine. Being an entrepreneur is full of ups and downs, try not to get so caught up in where you think you’re supposed to be that you forget to enjoy the ride.
So that’s it for our 5 biggest lessons! We’ve learned so much and we’re excited to start putting more of what we’ve learned into action. Stay tuned for some announcements on how we’re closing out 2018!
